    Chester County’s variety of arts may surprise you! We have a vibrant arts community thanks to a heritage rich in music, theatre and arts and crafts. We also consider BBQ to be an art around here and we have some of the best and most famous BBQ pits in the South. With weekend community dances featuring live local musicians and songwriters, the BBQ Festival which features two full days of local musicians and artists, the thriving theatre and fine arts departments at Freed-Hardeman University and the school system it’s easy to see we have a strong passion for art in our community.

    Henderson Arts Commission

    PrintThe Henderson Arts Commission works to recognize, educate, enrich and entertain through the arts in Henderson, Chester County and the surrounding area. From March to September, the Arts Commission hosts Arts in the Alley each third Thursday. Arts in the Alley is an outdoor gathering celebrating local musicians and vendors selling homemade products.     NoPhoto The Troy Plunk Art Gallery in the Bulliner-Clayton Visual Arts Building displays art by local, regional and student artists. To attend opening lectures and receptions, see the schedule dates and times on the fhu.edu website. The Troy Plunk Art Gallery on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University encourages campus and community appreciation of art by providing opportunities for visitors to view original pieces of art. The gallery hosts four major exhibitions per year, as well as senior exhibits for all graduating studio art majors plus additional projects outside the gallery’s walls. The gallery stimulates active learning about art and the creative process by providing opportunities for dialogue that allows students to interact with the artists at opening lectures and receptions. The senior exhibits provide students with the opportunity to exhibit a body of work and to explain and defend their work with faculty and other students.

    Chester County Community Band

    NoPhoto The Chester County Community Band is made up of local musicians eighth grade and higher. Participants must provide their own instruments, with the exception of large percussion instruments and tubas, which may be provided by the band. The band is directed primarily by Chester County High School band director Keith Brown, but hosts guest conductors on occasion.

    NoPhoto Freed-Hardeman University is an academic community, associated with churches of Christ, which is dedicated to providing an excellent education for undergraduate and graduate students. This private institution exists to serve the church and society by helping shape students into the image of Christ while empowering them to face the challenges of a changing world. The Roland Historical Room contains nearly 30,000 objects and 500 linear feet of documents covering forty years of the university’s history.
