    Chester County Courthouse

    NoPhoto The current courthouse was built in 1914 after the first two burned. Several scenes from the original Walking Tall movie were filmed at the courthouse, including the memorable courtroom scene. The courthouse is on the Tennessee Registry of Historic Places.

    NoPhoto Chickasaw State Park is situated on some of the highest terrain in West Tennessee. Of the area’s 14,383 acres of timberland, 1,280 acres are used for recreation. The remainder is state forest managed jointly by the State Forestry Division and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The park is located in Chester and Hardeman counties, eighteen miles south of Jackson, Tennessee on Highway 100. Activities including camping, hiking trails, lake with swimming, paddle boat and canoe rental, horseback riding, wrangler campground, cabins, event venues, playgrounds, and volleyball are available for visitors.

    Ayers Auditorium

    NoPhoto For almost 150 years, Freed-Hardeman University and its predecessors have provided quality education in the heart of downtown Henderson. Associated with churches of Christ, the four-year university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to offer bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees as well as a doctorate in education. In the Fall 2014 semester, approximately 1,400 undergraduate and 450 graduate students were enrolled. Typically, students from more than 35 states and 12 countries enroll. International travel/study opportunities and a strong emphasis on instructional technology are important features of the university.     NoPhoto Historic Hardeman house, located at 307 White Avenue, is available for receptions, teas, weddings and other special events. The home, built in 1915 and designed by well-known architect Hubert T. McGee, was the residence of former Freed-Hardeman President N.B. Hardeman for 39 years. The plan for the six-bedroom house included many “twins”: twin bay windows, twin fireplaces and twin stairways. Hardeman House and its grounds are the site of a Victorian Tea Party each spring. Lectureships, graduation ceremonies and musical and theatrical performances are regularly scheduled in the auditorium. Facilities include 13 cabins with 20 bunks each, bathhouses, teaching shelters, pavilion, covered gym, combination administration building/dining hall, an outdoor swimming pool and amphitheater. The camp also has a five-acre lake for fishing as well as plenty of outdoor space for hiking, group games and sports. It is available year round for family reunions and retreats.
